FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I've heard it's normal for breastfeeding to be difficult. How do I know if I need an appointment?

Schedule an appointment if you:

  • are expecting a baby—or multiples—and plan on breastfeeding, or

  • have had breast surgery, or

  • are experiencing sore or injured nipples, even in the early days, or

  • are supplementing, despite your desire to breastfeed, or

  • are using a nipple shield, or

  • are interested in adoptive lactation/induced lactation/relactation, or

  • are concerned about your milk production/think you’re not making enough, or

  • want to rule out or confirm tongue tie or lip tie in your baby, or

  • are going back to work and want to figure out how to fit in breastfeeding and pumping, or

  • are ready to wean my baby.

Schedule an appointment if your baby:

  • is not gaining weight, has lost weight, or is gaining slowly (20g or less/day), or

  • is jaundiced and it is interfering with breastfeeding, or

  • is having less than 6 very wet diapers and 4 large stools in 24hrs after day 4, or

  • was born before 38 weeks, or

  • is sleepy while feeding, or

  • is clicking or noisy at the breast or bottle, or

  • clamps down while breastfeeding, or

  • is very gassy or spits up frequently, or

  • fusses or cries at the breast, or

  • is having difficulty latching or is unable to latch to one or both sides, or

  • prefers the bottle, or

  • keeps his head tilted to one side, or

  • never seems satisfied after breastfeeding.

When is the next available appointment?

It is our goal to accommodate each new appointment within same day to 48 hours of contact, but it does depend on availability, which may vary. Please call or text 305.928.5868 to schedule an appointment for an in-home breastfeeding consultation so we may secure a time slot for you as soon as possible.

Are there weekend and holiday hours? The Milk Collective does have availability on weekends and holidays. There is a $50 convenience fee for weekend or holiday appointments.

Do you take insurance?

Currently, the Affordable Care Act provides for reimbursement of lactation services by your insurance company, but payment is due directly to The Milk Collective at the time of service. Reimbursement of services by your insurance company is not guaranteed by The Milk Collective and is directly between your insurance provider and you/the member. An itemized bill will be provided to you with the information required by your insurance company for possible reimbursement upon your request. Refunds will not be issued.

What forms of payment do you accept?

The Milk Collective accepts cash and credit/debit cards, including FSA or HSA cards at the time of service.

What should I expect at the consultation?

While each consultation is specific to your circumstances, some parts of the consultation remain the same.

  • Consent and Intake Forms must be filled out prior to my arrival. The consultation cannot start without the completed forms, and, because they are lengthy, filling out at the time of our appointment will take up the time we could be working together to help you reach your breastfeeding goals.

  • If this is a lactation consultation or follow up, part of the consultation includes a feeding observation. Please ensure baby will not be just fed, or too hungry, at the time of our consultation. What is your cancellation policy?

We understand emergencies happen and babies are unpredictable. But, once a time slot is reserved for you, it means there is another baby who needs care that we are unable to see. Please note a $50 fee will be charged for any cancellations that may occur within 24 hours of your scheduled appointment time. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please call, leave a message AND text 305.928.5868 letting us know you will be unable to keep your scheduled appointment time. If an appointment is canceled, we reserve the right to require a $75 non-refundable booking fee for any future appointments which will then be applied to the total consultation fee at our next appointment.
